Post 94: One State

Tiger baseball, softball advance in tournaments
by MizzMatt 5/28/11
Columbia, MO- Both Tiger diamond squads were in action today, one in the super regional for the Women's College World Series and one in Oklahoma City for the Big 12 championships.  A win in the SR for the WCWS means that the softball team is one step closer to their third consecutive WCWS...and a win is what they got.  Chelsea Thomas gets another shutout for the Tigers as Mizzou defeated Washington 4-0 today and are now one win away from the WCWS.

On the baseball side, the eighth-seeded Tiger squad was in action in the Big 12 semifinals against top seed Texas.  The Tigers, who beat Texas in the opening game 6-4, then lost to them in game 1 today 6-1, rebounded and knocked off the Longhorns with a 2-1 victory to advance to the championship game!  The Tigers will face second seed Texas A&M for all the marbles in the Cinderella tournament run.

One State. One Spirit. One Mizzou.

Joplin, Sedalia decimated by tornadoes
by MizzMatt 5/26/11
Joplin, MO- Devastation for miles.  Thousands affected.  Tens of thousands without a home.  Joplin, Missouri was hit by the largest kind of tornado, an EF5.  The twister hit Joplin head-on on May 22, destroying nearly 75% of the town of about 50,000.  The high school was leveled, along with Wal-Mart and Home Depot.  To my knowledge, only one survivor has been found in Home Depot, and the death count in Joplin alone is up to 125.

Two days later, Sedalia was also hit by a tornado, though less powerful, but still enough to take out the bus barn serving Sedalia Public Schools.  The twister that hit Sedalia was rated as an EF2.  The statistics for yesterday (May 25) were over 900 reports of severe weather, 81 tornadoes and 0, yes ZERO deaths.  "People have learned from Joplin." -Al Roker

Today, May 26, Columbia TV station KOMU-TV8, in conjunction with the United Way, raised over $1 million for the Joplin relief.  Along with that, the University of Missouri started their own fundraiser by selling "One State. One Spirit. One Mizzou." t-shirts, with all proceeds benefiting the Joplin Relief Fund.  To purchase your Joplin Relief shirt, visit http://mutigers.cbscollegestore.com/store_contents.cfm?store_id=51&partner_id=13968&dept_id=410&product_id=193994 to place your order.  To donate to the American Red Cross, text "REDCROSS" to 90999 or visit redcross.org for more info.

I-70 Series divides Mizzou Nation
by MizzMatt 5/20/11
Kansas City, MO- The time only comes twice per season when Mizzou fans turn on each other.  Of course, it's the I-70 Series in the Major League Baseball setting as the Kansas City Royals hosts the St. Louis Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium this weekend.  Mizzou Nation seems to be divided pretty much down the middle on who they support, but there is reason to support the Royals.  Missouri grad Aaron Crow is a relief pitcher for the Royals, and in tonight's game, he faced two batters- NL MVP Albert Pujols and home run machine Matt Holliday.  After walking Pujols, Crow struck out Holliday to end the 8th inning en route to a 3-0 Royals victory.

Post 90: Live Chat with Frank Haith

Haith Live Chat
by MizzMatt via kansascity.com/coveritlive/ 5/19/11
Missouri head basketball coach Frank Haith held a live chat on www.kansascity.com/coveritlive today, answering questions from fans.  I've selected a few of the better questions and coach Haith's answers and have them below.  No doctoring, no editing.  Just a straight copy/paste.

Q: What style of play will mu fans plan on seeing in the future?
Frank Haith (FH): We want to score in the first six or seven seconds of the shot clock. If we don't score that early, we will execute as far as our spacing and screening. We want to play inside out. Paint touches. Establish that early. Defensively, we want to continue with the pressure. We will have some extended court pressure, but we'll have some three quarter court pressure. Don't like giving up the paint on defense. Cut down driving lanes, have a good rotation.

Q: How are you and the team coming together? Do you feel like you are going to gel well?
FH:  We've gotten off to a great start this spring. I'm a relationship guy, so I spend a lot of time with my players, so they get to know me as much as I get to know them. That will help with our ability to jell. It goes both ways. Early on, I was reaching out to them, now those guys are calling me a lot.

Q: Frank, what is your number 1 goal the first 5 years on the job at Mizzou?
FH:  Beat Kansas. and play in the postseason and compete for a national championship. That's our goal every year.

Q: Besides the overall goals of a championship and building something special in columbia etc., what is the main thing that allows you to connect with a potential future tiger?
FH:  Our job is total growth of student athletes to succeed on and off court. as head coach, that has to be first and foremost. Being there and supporting our student athletes. We want all our young men to leave with a degree.

Q:  How does Missouri's facilities compare ti Miami and the other schools of the ACC
FH: Our facilities are as good as they are in the country. NBA type arena. No question our facility will attract quality student athletes. More importantly, we'll have people in the stands, which is important to have a great home court advantage.

Q:  Coach, can you tell us what your thoughts are on the new big 12? and how that may alter the way the country veiws big 12 basketball? how it may impact your recruiting efforts?
FH:  We'll have the only true champion of the BCS schools because of the round-robin scheduling. We have great coaches in this league. It's an outstanding basketball league. Since coaching in ACC, this league and Big 10, we have chance to have one of the premier basketball leagues in country. We can recruit nationally, which will also help our teams.

Q:  What was your involvement in the Bowers and English's draft process?
FH:  I helped in getting good feedback. Spent time talking about what's good feedback, what's not good feedback. Been very encouraging and positive with them. They're both intelligent young men. They did a good job of focusing on the right things.

Q: Hi Coach... Welcome to Mizzou!! The [MLB] I-70 series is coming up this week end, who are you pulling for?
FH:  Looking forward to watching those games. Will go to both those ballparks for the first time and throw out the first pitch. Am now a Royals and Cardinals fan. June 25 in St. Louis against the Blue Jays, I'll throw out the first pitch. Royals TBA, but after Mizzou day on June 4.

Q: Coach, is Kadeem Green going to be ready for the season? How is his agility at this point?
FH:  He had a major injury in high school and redshirted last year. Getting better and better. Needs to get stronger. His mobility and agility is fine. He needs to get more physical to get ready to take on the Big 12.

Post 89: UConn Transfer?

A Huskie with Tiger blood?
by MizzMatt via PowerMizzou.com 3/19/11
New Haven, CT- A possible transfer for the Frank Haith administration could be coming way of the University of Connecticut Huskies.  Jamaal Coombs-McDaniel, who was allegedly arrested for possession of marijuana, has decided to leave Jim Calhoun and the Huskies as a memory.  He has already made an unofficial visit to Hofstra University and plans to visit Miami (FL) [Haith's former employer] next week, following up with a visit to Mizzou the week after that.  He has also listed UC-Irvine as a possible destination.

Coombs said of his transfer, "I just wanted to play more, finish up my career strong, personally, and basically be a main, focal player on a team at this point in my career ... My playing time was going up, going down, going up, and we have a lot of good kids coming back next year. I don't want to spend my junior year like that. I want to be happy throughout the year."

What about your relationship with Jim Calhoun?  He added that he and coach were "cool".  He added, "I respect him, I'm sure he respects me. It's just personal business. I have to look for a better situation for me."

What the probability is that he chooses to transfer to Mizzou over Hofstra, Miami and UC-Irvine is, I don't know.  But what I do know is that Coombs' former AAU teammate and good friend Phil Pressey plays at Mizzou (in case you didn't know).  Perhaps that could come into play, since Pressey decided to not follow former Tiger coach Mike Anderson to the University of Arkansas after a whirlwind of speculation that he would.

Big 12 Softball Champions

Tiger softball to host WCWS Regional
by MizzMatt 5/16/11 @matt_jeffrey17 on Twitter
Columbia, MO- Outright Big 12 Champions.  It has a nice ring to it.  The University of Missouri softball team, led by redshirt sophomore ace pitcher Chelsea Thomas have won their first conference title since 1997, and have done it in superb fashion.  After scoring 16 runs in two games against Iowa State, the Tigers did their part.  It was up to Texas to lose to Baylor for Mizzou to have the outright title.  Baylor upset the Longhorns 2-1, which allowed Missouri to no longer have a "share" of the regular season title, but instead, can be greedy and say it's all for themselves.  The Tigers finish the season at 15-3 in conference play (Texas went 14-4) and 46-7 overall record.

Mizzou enters the NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) as the 5th seed overall, and will play host to a regional that includes Illinois State, Indiana and DePaul.  Missouri will face Illinois State on Friday, 5/20 at 6:30p, and whomever wins that game will face the winner of Indiana vs DePaul on Saturday at noon.  If Missouri wins their regional, they will host a super regional at University Field.

Custer's Last Stand

General George Armstrong Custer gathered his troops around the campfire the day before his last stand.  A runner came and told him news of the impending attack.

Custer said to his troops, "Men, I have good news and I have bad news.  The bad news is the Sioux have us surrounded and are decked out in their war paint and are waiting for dawn to slaughter us all.  They're on horseback with their bows and arrows as well as hatchets for scalping.  The probability of us surviving tomorrow are very, very slim."

"Well, what's the good news, General?" asked one soldier.

"The good news is we don't have to ride through Kansas again."

Osama, Yo Mama!

Biggest news of the year
by MizzMatt 5/2/11
Islamabad, Pakistan- It's the biggest news of the year, and it's not related to Mizzou Athletics.  No, it's not MU beating Oklahoma on Homecoming weekend.  It's not ESPN College GameDay coming to the Quad for a record-breaking broadcast.  It's not Mary Burke winning 'Athlete of the Year' at the annual ROARS awards.  It's Osama bin Laden being killed.  US Navy SEAL Team 6, founded by Auburn alumni Richard Maricinko, is credited with killing the World's Most Wanted terrorist, just outside of Islamabad, Pakistan.  Millions took to the streets following the news of his death in celebration...not for someone dying, but for justice finally being served.  KOMU-TV8 reported that about 3,000 people packed Richmond Ave on Mizzou's campus in celebration of the word, sporting sparklers, blasting Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" and erupting in a spontaneous Star Spangled Banner to go along with a MU student launching fireworks.  The actual number is unknown, but Cosmo of Y107's "Cosmo & JC In The Morning" made the similarity to ESPN GameDay on the Quad.  I would like to take this time to pass on my thank you to the US Military, ALL branches, for their ongoing service!
