New court met with angst by fans

COLUMBIA, MO- Senior Laurence Bowers gave Mizzou fans a preview of what the basketball court will look like for the inaugural season in the SEC, and the reveal was dissimilar to that of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Fans appear to take a traditionalist stance to the design, which has "MIZZOU" in the new branding text at both ends underneath the basket, the "SEC" circle logo in the lane, and a large oval Tiger logo at mid-court. "Norm Stewart Court" with Stormin' Norman's signature still adorns the floor, and accompanying it on either side of the timeline is "TIGERS". Conspicuously absent from the new look is what has become a signature for Mizzou basketball courts- the Missouri state outline.

The traditionalists made their disapproval known of the absence of the outline, but as someone from the University may say is that "with a new conference, comes a new look." Fans weighed in with their thoughts on the Mizzou Nation Facebook page:

"I like it," said Bud. "But I prefer the state of Missouri on it."

"Exactly!" Shane added. "Where is the state outline? Where is the tradition? First get rid of the M's on the helmets and now the State outline? Are we a university of just a business?"

"The logo in the middle of the state was perfect at mid court. Besides that I like this," as Rudy chimed in.

So what's all the hubbub about? Here's the picture that Bowers tweeted earlier today. You decide for yourself if the University is shying away from its roots just a little too much.

New Conference, New Look, Same Attitude

4/14/12- A New Era Begins

COLUMBIA, MO- Saturday, April 14th, 2012. It's all we as Mizzou fans have heard for the last few months. It was the day of the annual spring football Black & Gold game, and it was the most anticipated day in recent history with the unveiling of new Nike uniforms for five Missouri sports. Soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, men's basketball, and of course football will all have a new look for the inaugural season in the SEC.

For the past 18 months, the University has been working along with Nike on a new branding initiative for the new unis. The new uniforms (right) are a part of the new conference move for Mizzou, which will take place on July 1st, 2012.

Oh, and just in case you didn't know, there was some football to be had as well. Faurot Field was the place for the spring game, and there was a few noticeable difference around the field. The "BIG XII" logos that were once on the grass knolls leading up from the field to the stands were removed. The "SEC" circular logo was adorned on the players' jerseys. SEC crews patrolled the sidelines with SEC on the scrimmage and first down markers. The only thing missing was the SEC logo on the field, which will happen after the resurfacing.

18,614 braved early inclement weather that gave way to a perfect Saturday afternoon for some football. The first half, Tigers2 was spotted 14 points, and wound up winning the first half 37-10. Jimmy Hunt reeled in an 88-yard pass from Ashton Glaser, while Donovan Bonner returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown. T.J. Moe scored for Mizzou1 on a 32-yard pass from Corbin Berkstresser, and Andrew Baggett added a 47-yd field goal for Mizzou1 for the "starters" 10 points. Rolandis Woodland also caught a pass from Glaser for a 35-yd touchdown for Tigers2. The defense won the second half, 5-3 over the offense.

Junior quarterback James Franklin did not take any snaps, coming off of shoulder surgery to repair his glenohumeral joint (shoulder). Berkstresser finished off 13/20 for 187 yards while Glaser went 14/25 for 213 and 2 TDs. Newcomer Alex Demczak went 2/4 for seven yards and an interception.

And of course, the new football uniforms.

Softball Sweeps, Baseball Drops Series

Tiger softball sweeps 18th Baylor in weekend series

COLUMBIA, MO- The University of Missouri softball team, which was a preseason number one in the Big 12 and number five nationally comes off yet another winning weekend. The 12th-ranked Tigers faced off against the 18th-ranked Baylor Bears on University Field, and walked back to their residence halls with three more victories on the season. Game one, Mizzou rolled to a 6-1 win. Game two, the Tigers had to battle back in a come-from-behind 4-2 victory. Game three was no contest as the Tigers' offense continued to roll and their stout defense recorded another shutout. Game three final was 7-0.

Mizzou softball is now 28-5, 7-2 on the season.

Baseball, on the other hand, was in College Station, TX to take on future SEC opponent Texas A&M. The Aggies entered the series ranked 6th nationally, but Mizzou would make a series of it. The Tigers lost game one to A&M, 6-8. Mizzou (16-11, 3-3) rallied in game two, knocking off the Aggies 4-3 on Saturday. Sunday, they fell just short of winning in a 6-7 loss. Brannon Champagne has safely reached base in 19 straight games, averaging .312 batting on the year with a .404 OBP. Champagne also has 17 RBIs on the season.

Tennis evened up their season record at 8-8 with matching 4-3 upset wins over Stephen F. Austin and Rice University.

Border War Champions. Again.

Tigers clinch 6th-straight Border War Series Championship

COLUMBIA, MO- The rivalry has been around since the 1850s, but since the 2002-03 athletic season, the University of Missouri and Kansas University have battled for the Border War/Showdown Series Championship. The Tigers won the first, by a tally of 32-8.5. The two schools flipped-flopped the next three, trading back and forth, each winning by narrower margins than the first year. Since then, Mizzou has been unflappable and the Series trophy has resided in Mizzou Arena since 2006-07.

With the Tiger softball team's three game sweep of Kansas last weekend, the Tigers have clinched their 6th-straight Border War/Showdown Series, and their 8th overall. Holding a 21-4 lead, there are only 15 points remaining in the season.

The clinch is for what will likely be the final in the Border War/Showdown Series. Year-by-year results, since 2002-03 inception:

Tigers blank Jayhawks in three game set, baseball, tennis, women's swimming updates

COLUMBIA, MO- The University of Missouri softball team, which entered the 2012 campaign with a preseason rank of 5th nationally and 1st in the Big 12, posted 24 runs in three games over arch rival Kansas University. 24 runs, and the Jayhawks struggled to produce any offense whatsoever. The final, cumulative score was 24-0. Goose eggs across the board for KU as the Tigers, led by senior Chelsea Thomas, continued their quest for the Big 12 title on University Field.

Kansas, riding a 20-game win streak entering Friday's game, only managed seven hits in all three games. In game one, a 10-0 Tiger win, Thomas pitched 5.2 innings, only giving up one hit and striking out four. After game two was rained out and postponed to Sunday, the Tigers' offense kept rolling to a 5-0 shutout. Thomas again pitched 5.0 innings, with two hits, three walks and nine Ks. As for game three, the second of a Sunday double header, the Tigers didn't let up at all in their 9-0 win to complete the sweep. Danielle Nottelmann pitched a 6.0 inning, two hit, seven K game to win their 15th straight. The Tigers are now 20-3 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 league play.

BASEBALL

High Point came to Taylor Stadium to take on the Tiger baseball squad, who entered Friday's game on a nine-game win streak. The Tigers took every bit of the game to get past High Point as Ben Turner cranked a walkoff single in the 9th that brought in Blake Brown from second. Tigers win game one of the series, 8-7. Game two was a slightly more defensive showdown, though Brown hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help give the Tigers the 4-0 shutout. The win extended their streak to 11 games, their best since 2008. The winning pitcher, Blake Holovach, pitched the first complete game for the Tigers since Nick Tepesch in 2010, and the first complete game shutout since Kyle Gibson in 2009.

Game three was a streak-breaker, however. The Tigers fell to High Point 13-7 due in large part to a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Tigers (12-6) were led offensively by Brown again, as he drilled his sixth home run of the season and the fourth of this week alone.

TENNIS

The 56th-ranked Tiger tennis squad fell to the 8th-ranked Texas Longhorns, 5-2. Mizzou is now 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 conference play. The Longhorns on the other hand, improve to 9-4, 2-0.

W. SWIMMING

Mizzou women's swimming and diving finished 14th at the 2012 NCAA Championships. The Tigers' 98 points landed them their first top-15 finish in program history. Along with the record finish, seven new team records were set, and six were named as NCAA All Americans: Dominique Bouchard, Shara Stafford, Lisa Nathanson, Cassie Cunningham, and Emily Doucette all made 1st Team, while Amanda Masters' participation in the 400m medley earned her 2nd Team honors.

A Day of Upsets

Mizzou downed by Norfolk State on Bracketbuster Friday

OMAHA, NE- 86-84 and a last second Phil Pressey shot that went off the short side of the rim. That's how Mizzou's season ended. 15-seed Norfolk State became just the sixth team in NCAA tournament history to knock off a 2-seed. The last time it happened was Hampton over Iowa State in 2001.

The Tigers were led by the Big 12's 6th Man of the Year Michael Dixon, who had 22 points. Two other Tigers netted 20- Marcus Denmon and Flip. Ratliffe chipped in a well-earned 14 of his own, while English struggled to get going, only scoring 2. Matt Pressey had 6.

The Spartans, on the other hand, were lights out. They also had three players with at least 20 points. Kyle O'Quinn led all scorers with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Chris McEachin and Pendarvis Williams had 20 each, respectively. Marcos Tamares was the fourth Spartan in double digits with 11.

Both teams appeared to have lived and died by the 3-pt shot. Mizzou shot an impressive 13/29, but Norfolk State was electric, shooting 10/19 from beyond the arc. During the regular season, the Spartans only averaged five 3s a game.

They were not alone in their upset, however, as Ohio defeated Michigan 65-60, a 13 over a 4. Lehigh had their time in the spotlight as they became the second 15-seed to knock off a 2 in the same day, a tournament first. Lehigh beat Duke 75-70. Purdue (10) topped Saint Mary's (7) and Show-Me State's own St. Louis Billikens defeated the Memphis Tigers. Mark Gottfried's 11-seed North Carolina State Wolfpack also upset the 6th-seeded San Diego State Aztecs. Yesterday, Colorado won over UNLV, an 11 over a 6, and 12-seed Virginia Commonwealth Rams played "shocker" over the 5-seed Wichita State Shockers.

What many experts called the "biggest upset in tournament history", Norfolk State over Mizzou, was quickly overshadowed by Lehigh over Duke, at least on the scale. Duke, former national champions and perennial NCAA powerhouses, loses to Lehigh. But if you were to watch ESPN, all they're talking about is the Spartans over the Tigers. What will it take to get the monkey off Mizzou's back?

The Grand Hoedown

Mizzou draws #2 in West

COLUMBIA, MO- The Big Dance, The Grand Hoedown, March Madness, or simply the NCAA Tournament. Whatever you choose to call it, it's here. A journey that started back in November will only take two more weeks to complete. At the end, one team will have that One Shining Moment.

With their successful 30-4 season and a Big 12 Championship, the University of Missouri hosted a watch party, and another excellent crowd showed up at Mizzou Arena for an event other than basketball or a concert. Much like when College GameDay sponsored by State Farm came to the University of Missouri, fans showed up in droves to find out where their Tigers would be seeded and who they would face in the first round of the NCAA National Tournament. They needn't wait long.

The Tigers will take on 15-seed Norfolk State in Omaha, NE on Friday.

Three of the four 1-seeds in the tournament lost their respective conference tournaments; Kentucky, Syracuse, and North Carolina. Michigan State, the fourth overall 1-seed is the only conference tournament champion in the bunch. Syracuse lost to Cincinnati in the Big East semifinals, Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt in the SEC championship game, and Florida State defeated North Carolina in the ACC Championship, while Michigan State defeated Ohio State in the Big Ten.

College basketball analyst Dick Vitale (@DickieV) has bought stock in Mizzou in this year's tourney. "My Final 4 UK-Mizzou-FL ST-UNC!"

Boos rang out in Mizzou Arena when Michigan State was announced as the fourth 1-seed, but a member of the student cheering section affectionately known as The Antlers held up a sign that read "#2 is Good Enough". "Faith in Haith" was on the latter side.

The Big 12 Tournament Champion Tigers took time before the CBS Selection Sunday broadcast for a special presentation. Kim English, Marcus Denmon, Steve Moore, and Jarrett Sutton all addressed the crowd.

"I just wanna thank my teammates and you guys, the fans," said English. "We may not have won the regular season, but we took care of business in Kansas City."

Coach Frank Haith also addressed the crowd. "We didn't get the regular season championship, but we gave it a heck of a run," he said. "We're not done yet. When I got here, I said I wanted to win and I wanted to cut down nets. We're not done. We still have six more wins to get."

30-4 in first year at Mizzou

COLUMBIA, MO- April 5th, 2011. "We are proud to announce Frank Haith as the 17th coach of the University of Missouri," said Tigers' Athletic Director Mike Alden to much criticism from fans and the media alike. What? How? Wait...huh? Who is this man you call Frank Haith?

Frank Haith, the man who took Miami to a .500 season in conference play a year ago, just took Mizzou to a 14-4 Big 12 record and a conference championship in his first season. Haith, who was named by ponzi schemer Nevin Schapiro in a "pay for play" scandal, turned around and took a group of guys with amazing potential and turned them into something great.

"This is the best team we've seen all year," said ESPN commentator Bobby Knight. "They have some of, if not the best guards in the country."

"If this Missouri team can keep up this kind of play, they're going to be scary good," added Brent Musberger in another broadcast.

Hundreds were jumping on the Mizzou bandwagon, though much of ESPN were not.

"I'm just not convinced that they can compete in this league," said analyst Doug Gottlieb, an Oklahoma State basketball alumni. "They're good, but they're not great."

All these were said before Mizzou's impressive conference tournament run that culminated in a championship, their second since league inception in 1996-97, and their final one before leaving for the SEC. But back to Haith.

April 5th:

"You lied to me, Mike. They don't love me just yet," said Frank at his introductory press conference. "I don't look at the negativity I'm hearing so far as a negative, I look at is as a positive because that's why I'm here. That's what I want. I want that passion because I want to win.

"I want to cut down nets."

What did he just say? That's a bold statement from the new guy in town. That statement resonated around the league. His team had the potential, sure, though the guys are the remnants of the previous coach. Not once did Haith say that, however. Not once has he said "Wait til my guys get here." He has given credit where credit is due, and he's taken this team leaps and bounds above the league with his style of offense.

"Frank Haith is the best coach I've had in my four years here," said senior guard Kim English.

30-4. Let that sink in for a moment. Thirty wins. The last Mizzou team to win 30 games in a season was the last time they won the Big 12 championship- 2009 when they went 31-7. That's the ONLY other time they've passed the 30-win milestone in school history. That year they advanced to the Elite Eight, just the third Elite Eight appearance in program history.

While many teams would try to stop the Haith Train, only three would succeed. Oklahoma State upset the Tigers in Stillwater, Kansas State swept, and Kansas needed overtime to knock off Mizzou by a single point in Lawrence. Many said it was because of the weak strength of schedule that led to Haith's stellar first season. Many others will state it's one thing- the team.

Marcus Denmon finished second in the Big 12 in scoring. English was the team's best 3-pt shooter. Michael Dixon was the 6th Man of the Year. This team is so well rounded and so capable, it just needed a good system to take it somewhere. Step in Haith. He took what I liked to commonly refer to as "40 Minutes of Slop" and turned it into "40 Minutes of Awe". He took the same squad as last year, minus Justin Safford and losing Laurence Bowers to an ACL injury, and made them a team. After losing Bowers, he didn't panic. To my recollection, there has only been a couple of recorded jacket throws by Frank this season. Compare that to Anderson, who has recorded jacket throws in just about every game he's coached.

"I want to cut down nets," Frank said on April 5th, 2011. 340 days later, his wish came true on the floor of the Sprint Center in Kansas City. He went from wanting to doing. All he needed was a little pHaith.

Mizzou takes conference hardware as parting gift

KANSAS CITY, MO- For the second time in the Mizzou senior class' career, they found themselves facing Baylor for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Championship. For the second time in their careers, they defeated Baylor for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Championship. In 2009, they knocked off the Bears 73-60. Tonight, in front of a crowd heavily in favor of the Tigers, they walked away with a just as decisive 90-75 victory. The Tigers forced a turnover on Baylor's first possession, scored on their first possession, and never relinquished the lead.

Kim English, coming off a thigh contusion against Texas, jettisoned Mizzou (30-4) to their second Big 12 title with 19 points to lead all scorers. Ricardo Ratliffe fouled out with 4:04 to play, finished with 15 points. Marcus Denmon, who suffered through a rolled ankle against Texas and went 0/10 for 2 points, turned it around for 15 on 4/10 shooting, but a perfect 6/6 from the stripe. Phil "Flip" Pressey netted 15 of his own, while Michael Dixon, the 6th man yet again, contributed 17 off the bench. Matt Pressey and Steve Moore each chipped in 5 and 4 of their own, respectively, but Moore's statement dunk and a block on Baylor's next possession were huge as he replaced Ratliffe for the final 4:00 of the game. Jarrett Sutton, Andrew Jones and Andy Rosburg were not utilized in tonight's game.

Mizzou kept Baylor (27-7) at arm's length for most of the game, but after Ratliffe fouled out, the Bears started to claw their way back in, taking a 12 point deficit down to five. The parade of fouls to stop the clock are what did Baylor in toward the end, despite Flip missing the front end of consecutive 1-1's. Following those misses, Pressey nailed four straight to help clinch the win.

Perry Jones III led Baylor with 16, most of which came in the second half as he exploited Missouri's lack of height in the post. Brady Heslip, "The Canadian Sniper", scored 14 in the contest and Deuce Bello netted 13 off the bench. Pierre Jackson had 10, Quincy Acy with 7, Quincy Miller with 6, A.J. Walton scored 8 before fouling out late, and Anthony Jones scored a free throw to get into the stat book.

While Baylor struggled shooting, only 39.7% for the game, Mizzou torched the nylons for 53% (50% on the year) before cutting them down. The Tigers dominated in the 3-pt department, outshooting Baylor 42.9-26.3%. The Tigers also went 80% from the charity stripe.

In five games at the Sprint Center this season- Cal, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Baylor; the Tigers have gone an impressive 5-0, winning by a combined 115 points. The wins are highlighted even more so after Kansas University placed a billboard in Kansas City, emphasizing the first half of the city's name. Mizzou, however, had other plans.

After Baylor knocked Kansas out of the tourneys in the semifinals and later lost to Mizzou, Kim English had this to say: "This is OUR city. No one else's," poking fun at a comment Jayhawk head coach Bill Self said earlier this week.

"It's great. It's really great. Just...talk to the guys," said an emotional Frank Haith, who led the Tigers to their impressive year in just his first season. Haith will have coached in three different conferences in as many years starting next year as Mizzou makes the switch to the SEC.

Missouri's decisive victory raises some eyebrows, especially with three of Joe Lunardi's projected 1-seeds all losing in their respective conference tournaments. Kansas, Duke, and Syracuse were all knocked out of contention for the conference title, and it opens the door for teams like Missouri and Michigan State to move up in the brackets. Following in NC State's Mark Gottfried, English made a plea to ESPN's Lunardi...

Holly Rowe: "Kim, you analyze college basketball, what do you have to say about tonight's game?"

Kim English: "Joe Lunardi, make us a 1-seed."

The championship is just the icing on the cake for Mizzou, as fans started chanting "SEC! SEC! SEC!" with time winding down. After splitting the regular season with Kansas and having a stellar tournament performance, it was their championship to lose. They carried their momentum from game to game, and capped it off with something that will likely linger as a bad taste in the remaining Big 12's collective mouth.

Big 12 Tourney: Semifinals

Mizzou, Baylor set for rematch

KANSAS CITY, MO- The semis were filled with excitement as Baylor took on Kansas and Mizzou took on Texas. However, the big game is set. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament final will feature a rematch from the 2009 game between the University of Missouri Tigers and the Baylor University Bears. The Tigers won the '09 meeting, 73-60. The game will be a test, considering how tough it is to beat a team three times in a season, plus given the fact that the Bears knocked off top-seeded Kansas.

GAME 1: For the second time since 2008, Baylor upsets the top-seeded Jayhawks 81-72 to advance to the finals. Kansas' Tyshawn Taylor led all scorers with 20 points while Perry Jones III led Baylor with 18. Baylor moves to 27-6 on the year with the win, and Kansas' season comes to a close until the national tournament with a final record of 27-6. 

The Bears do have history stacked against them, however. No Texas-based team has won ever won the Big 12 basketball hardware since the league's inception in the 1996-97 season. The winners of the tournament (defeated):

GAME 2: After upsetting Iowa State and co-coach of the year Fred Hoidberg, Rick Barnes took on his protege Frank Haith. Haith served as an assistant from 2001-2004 before going to Coral Gables to coach the Miami Hurricanes. Enough background, it's game time. The Tigers got off to a sluggish start...except Phil Pressey and Kim English. English and Pressey would combine for 46 points before the game was over. Held to just a seven point advantage at the half, the Tigers erupted to an 81-67 victory.

A scary moment in the game for the Longhorns when J'Covan Brown went down hard, holding the right side of his neck. He laid on the floor before being helped off, only to return a few minutes later.  Later on in the second half, the Tigers had their chance at a scare when English went down to a contusion on his thigh after inadvertent contact.

English finished the night 9/10, his only miss was after his injury. Pressey went 8/13 and had 4 assists. The story of the night was Marcus Denmon. 2 points, NO FIELD GOALS. Both of Denmon's points came on his two free throw attempts. Michael Dixon earned the 6th man of the game with his 10 points coming off the bench, while Ricardo Ratliffe tossed in 18 of his own.

Mizzou improves to 29-4 on the year, while Texas drops to 20-13, and will await to see where they will be placed in the field of 68 for the national tournament.

Big 12 Tourney: Quarterfinals

Mizzou, Baylor, Kansas all advance

KANSAS CITY, MO- Last night, it was Oklahoma versus Texas A&M and Oklahoma State facing Texas Tech. TAMU and OKST both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament in the Sprint Center. Today's quarterfinal match-ups were entertaining to say the least.

Baylor and Kansas State kicked it off this morning as the 4- and 5-seeds in the conference tournament. The Bears (26-6) were sporting their neon yellow uniforms and walked away with a 82-74 win over Frank Martin's Wildcats (21-10). Perry Jones III led all scorers with a career-high 31.

Top-seeded Kansas took on Texas A&M in game number two. Kansas (27-5), ranked 3rd nationally in the most recent poll, advances to take on Baylor in the next round with a 83-66 win over the Aggies (14-18). Elijah Johnson led the Jayhawks with a career-high 26 while Khris Middleton scored 24 to lead Texas A&M.

Game three featured 2-seed and 5th-ranked Mizzou and Oklahoma State. During the regular season, the Tigers (28-4) split the games with the Cowboys (15-18), losing in Stillwater and winning decisively in Columbia. On the neutral floor, it was still no contest. The Tigers used a 21-6 first half run to open up the game en route to a 88-70 victory. Kim English led all scorers with 27 and Marcus Denmon tallied 24 of his own. Their career totals climb as a result, putting English at 1,526 career points and Denmon to 1,738. Denmon needs 21 points to tie Arthur Johnson for fifth on Mizzou's all-time list, and 98 to tie Steve Stipanovich for fourth. Mizzou will face the winner of Iowa State and Texas, the fourth and final game of the night.

Three-seed Iowa State, led by co-coach of the year Fred Hoidberg, takes on Rick Barnes' Texas Longhorns in the final game of the evening. The Cyclones are led offensively by "Rolls" Royce White, while the Longhorns have J'Covan Brown.

Frank Haith named Coach of the Year

COLUMBIA, MO- The Big 12 and Associated Press released their yearly accolades for the basketball portion of the academic year. It's really no surprise who won the National Coach of the Year. The University of Missouri's own Frank Haith. Haith wins the national award despite finishing behind Iowa State's Fred Hoidberg and Kansas University's Bill Self in Big 12 Conference voting.

"[Fred] Hoiberg wins coaching accolades after leading the Cyclones to the greatest turnaround in Big 12 history. Iowa State won nine more games than a year ago and earned the No. 3 seed in the Big 12 Championship. [Bill] Self is named top coach for the third time in the last four seasons and fourth time overall after leading KU to its eighth consecutive Big 12 regular season crown," cites big12sports.com on the reasoning behind Haith's exclusion from the voting.

The Tigers' awards didn't stop there. Michael Dixon, Jr was named the unanimous Big 12 "6th Man of the Year", averaging 13.3 points in 31 games off the bench. Down the stretch, he finished in double digits in 10 games, and shot an astounding 57% or better in seven games. Dixon becomes the second Tiger to win the award. Dixon also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Defensive Team.

Marcus Denmon was awarded with All-Big 12 First Team honors. He joins Thomas Robinson of Kansas, "Rolls" Royce White of Iowa State, Tyshawn Taylor of Kansas, and J'Covan Brown of Texas.

Ricardo Ratliffe made All-Big 12 Second Team along with Quincy Acy of Baylor, Pierre Jackson of Baylor, Rodney McGruder of Kansas State, and Keiton Page of Oklahoma State.

Phil Pressey and Kim English earned All-Big 12 Third Team honors alongside Perry Jones III of Baylor, Scott Christopherson of Iowa State, and Jeff Withey of Kansas.

Wrestling brings home first conference championship

COLUMBIA, MO- The Big 12 wrestling championships were in the Tigers' backyard- the Hearnes Center. It was fitting that the last year in the Big 12 conference is the first year Mizzou won a conference championship. Making it even better is the fact it was on our home floor.

"It is an accomplishment of so many people though that put some put effort in," said head coach Brian Smith. "I thank all the wrestlers that wrestled for me and all the people that donate to the program and make it get to where it is, all the trainers and doctors, there are so many people.  I am just really, really proud of everybody.  This team did an amazing job today."

Alan Waters, top seed at 125, won his match to get Mizzou started. Drake Houdashelt added another Mizzou win over OU's Nick Lester. The biggest win of the tournament for the Tigers was Zach Toal's upset over ISU's Andrew Sorensen..the top seed in the tournament and fourth nationally.

Season finale on the road

LUBBOCK, TX- The University of Missouri basketball team has already accomplished a lot this season. They've matched their 2nd-best start in program history at 17-1. They've made it to the top-2 in the country. They've won more conference games than any other team in program history, and with a win today, they will have more regular season wins than any other team in program history.

That's right. #7/8 Mizzou (26-4, 13-4) is just one win away from setting a new school record for wins in a regular season with 27.

Texas Tech kept the game close in the first half, keeping the deficit to four 32-28 at the break. A strong start to the second half by the Tigers catapulted them to an 18-pt, 58-40 with about 12:00 to play, their largest lead of the game. The Raiders kept Mizzou's leading scorer Marcus Denmon scoreless longer than any other team this year. For the entire first half, Marcus Denmon went 0/4 and no points. The Tigers were carried by Matt Pressey and Kim English in the first half, but in the second half, Denmon exploded on offense, scoring all 17 of his points in the final 20 minutes. By the time the game finished, Mizzou (15-pt favorites) would lead by as much as 22. Final score in Lubbock: 81-59. Mizzou improves to a school-record 27-4, 14-4 on the season, and will face the winner of Wednesday's Big 12 Championship 1st round game between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Final stats: English finishes with 20, Denmon exploded for 17 in the 2nd half, M. Pressey finished with 14, Ratliffe and Dixon with 13 each. Flip and Moore had 3 and 1 point, respectively. Tigers set a season-high on 3s, going 16/27 (.593) and shot 27/53 (.509) from the floor.

At one point in the game, Ricardo Ratliffe had as many rebounds by himself as the Red Raiders had as a team. Ratliffe recorded a double-double on the night.

The Tigers carry a distinct advantage over Texas Tech that the Raiders will carry over another team in the next four years- experience. Mizzou has 135 minutes played by their leading seniors of Denmon, English, Pressey, Ratliffe, and Steve Moore. By contrast, Texas Tech has 165 minutes by freshmen.

Baseball, softball update

The University of Missouri baseball and softball teams come a little closer to home after starting the season on a road trip. After taking two of three at Auburn, the baseball team lost three straight in San Francisco. The Tigers (2-5) are home for the first time this season to start off a home stand against Ball State. Game one of the three game set was held on Friday, March, 2nd, a 5-2 Tiger loss.

Softball (6-3) started off their season in Troy, AL and Palm Springs, CA. This weekend the squad is in Kansas City this weekend for the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament before coming home to Columbia next weekend for the DeMartini Invitation against Alcorn State, Boise State and Northern Illinois.

Women's head coach offered extension

COLUMBIA, MO- Mizzou women's basketball head coach Robin Pingeton is in her second year at the reigns of the program after being hired to replace Cindy Stein, and she's already being offered a second contract extension.

"We are excited to extend Robin's contract," said Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden. "She and her staff have continued to take the program in the right direction on the court, in the classroom and out in the community. They know how to build a program the right way and we're excited about the future of Mizzou women's basketball and thankful to have Robin as a representative of the Athletic Department and the entire University of Missouri."

Pingeton, who was named head coach on April 8th, 2010, will see her current contract expire on April 8th, 2016. The proposed extension will keep her on the MU sidelines through the 2017 season. 

"I am extremely grateful and appreciative of Mike Alden and the administrators at Missouri for having the confidence in me and my staff to lead the Missouri Women's Basketball team and for having the confidence to extend my contract for another year," said Pingeton.

Coach Pingeton also served at St. Ambrose from 1992-2000 where she amassed a 194-76 record, and at Illinois State from 2003-10, where she went 144-81 overall. In her two years at Mizzou, she has accumulated a 13-18, 5-11 record in 2010-11 and a 12-16, 2-15 record in 2011-12, prior to Saturday's season finale in Stillwater, OK.

Tigers honor winning-est seniors

COLUMBIA, MO- Coming off of a week in which they lost two consecutive games, the University of Missouri Tiger basketball team defeated the Iowa State Cyclones by the score of 78-72. The senior class, comprised of Steve Moore, Kim English, Ricardo Ratliffe, Marcus Denmon, Andrew Jones, and Jarrett Sutton, close out their time at Mizzou Arena with a 67-4 four-year overall record. The win, their 26th of this season, puts them as the top class in Mizzou program history with 13 conference wins. With one more game left in the regular season, the Tigers are now 26-4, 13-4 in Big 12 Conference play.

Following the game, the Mizzou seniors addressed the crowd that remained and thanked them for the past four years.

"Frank Haith is the best coach I've had in my four years here," said Kim English, from Baltimore, MD. "Thank you all, you're the best fan base in America!"

"When I first got here, I wasn't good at all," joked big 'STEEEVVVEEE' Moore, who had a superb dunk late in the game.

The Tigers clinch 2nd in the Big 12 with the win, and become the only team in the league to sweep Iowa State (21-9, 11-6)this year. Mizzou closes out their season at Texas Tech on Saturday, March 3rd. Tip off is set for 3p/CT on the Big 12 Network.

Don't blame the Refs

That's right. Don't blame the refs for Saturday's game against Kansas. It's not entirely the refs' fault we lost. As much as it pains me to point out, Mizzou did give up a 19-point lead in the second half. Instead of blaming the refs, focus on what lies ahead- March and the NCAA Tourney. This team has the ability to make a deep run in the tournament. Besides, if we blame the refs, we're no better than Kansas fans.

Faurot Changes

Proposed and expected 2012 modifications

COLUMBIA, MO- University of Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden announced today what many Tiger fans have hoped for- changes to Faurot Field. Among the major modification of a new $1.5M (approx) playing surface, this is what Mizzou fans can expect going into next season:

• Larger Tiger logo at midfield
• SEC conference logos
• "M-I-Z-Z-O-U" endzone diamonds instead of "MISSOURI"
• Touchdown Terrace Seating- new seats, more seats, which will also slightly raise the capacity of 71,004.
• Visiting team ticket allotment increased from approximately 3,800 to 6,000
• No re-entry. Once you're in, you're in.
• New football uniforms that will be unveiled at the Black & Gold Spring Game on April 14th. The new unis will focus more on the Tiger logo instead of the block "M". Alden reports that the University has been working with Nike for the last 18 months on a new design.
• Marching Mizzou will be moved from the south endzone, above the locker room, to the southeast corner of the student section on the east side of the stadium. Convenience for halftime performances and acoustics are the reasoning behind this move.

Alden expect Mizzou to sellout Faurot Field for 2012, which isn't that far-fetched, given the SEC fan bases travel notoriously well. The University will also be resealing a number of parking lots, which if you have tailgated recently, you know they are in desperate need of repair.

You, the fan, can also expect an increase in ticket pricing. Tiger Scholarship Fund (TSF) members will see an increase in minimum donations to keep their Priority Seating. The increases will be across the board, and there will also be an increase in TSF/Donor Priority Seating.

Weekend Review

Men, women win; baseball, softball start; hockey...?

COLUMBIA, MO- It was a wide world of sports for the University of Missouri over the weekend, with both men's and women's basketball seasons winding down on the road, and baseball and softball seasons just starting up.

Men's basketball traveled down to College Station, TX to take on Texas A&M for the last time as members of the Big 12 conference. Missouri's Kim English led the way for the Tigers with 21 points in the 71-62 win. Marcus Denmon also had 14, Phil Pressey with 13, and Mike Dixon had 15 off the bench as the fourth Tiger in double-digits. Ricardo Ratliffe, who was on pace to set a new NCAA record for field goal percentage, went 2/5 last night for 4 points. The Tigers (25-2, 12-2) kick off Kansas week with a visit from the Wildcats (18-8, 7-7) on Tuesday the 21st, then travel to Lawrence for the final time to take on #5 Kansas on Saturday. The Tigers lost the first contest in Manhattan, 75-59.

Women's basketball, led by second-year coach Robin Pingeton, finally grabbed their first conference win with a 70-65 win over Kansas in Lawrence. The win is the first for the Tigers since closing out non-conference play in January. Christine Flores led Mizzou with 24 points in the win while both Sydney Crafton and Kyley Simmons both scored 13. The Lady Tigers improve to 11-14, 1-13 on the year.

Baseball kicked off it's season on Friday down in Auburn, AL to take on the Auburn University Tigers. They started off their season on a sour note with a 5-2 loss. Saturday's game was rained out and postponed to Sunday for a doubleheader, which Mizzou swept 4-3 (7) and 6-4. Mizzou now carries a 4-1 series lead against their future SEC conference rival. Mizzou is 2-1 on the year and will take on the San Francisco Dons for a three-game series on the 24th-26th.

Softball also started their season over the weekend in the Quality Inn Classic, starting with a doubleheader on Friday. The Tigers won 3-2 over Ball State and 4-0 over host school Troy (AL). On Saturday, the 5th-ranked Tigers were upset by Eastern Kentucky 6-5 in 10 innings, and rebounded on Sunday with a 9-3 win over East Tennessee State. Ashley Fleming had two home runs over the weekend as Ehren Earleywine's team is 3-1 to start the year.

Mizzou hockey...yes, hockey...are the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) champions! The Tigers defeated Iowa on Saturday in the semifinals with a 5-3 win, then defeated Illinois State in the finals 4-1 to grab the championship. The club team, run through the Rec, finishes off their season with a stout 15-2 record.

Tigers tie 2010-11 win total

COLUMBIA, MO- Flashback. The Bears make a 3-pt shot as time expires to lose 89-88. Present day. Mizzou doesn't let it come down to a final possession.

The last two games for the Tigers prior to the game against Baylor on Saturday, 2/11, came down to one shot. One shot to tie. One shot that clanged off the rim. Elijah Johnson's one shot was off target in Mizzou's 74-71 win over Kansas on Feb. 4th in Columbia, and Steven Pledger's one shot missed it's mark in the Tigers's 71-68 win over Oklahoma on Feb. 6th in Norman.

Phil Pressey took the game over and the Tigers extended their lead with a record-tying 14 3-pt shots made on 28 attempts. Final score at Mizzou Arena: 72-57. Pressey led the Tigers with 19 points while Baylor's Quincy Miller led all scorers with 20. Marcus Denmon only needed 9 points to pass Jon Sunvold for 10th on Mizzou's all-time scoring list. Denmon finished with 16. Michael Dixon also finished with 16 off the bench and Kim English was the fourth Tiger in double-digit scoring with 12.

Next up for the 4th-ranked Tigers (23-2, 10-2) is Oklahoma State (12-13, 5-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 15th. Game time is set for 8p on ESPN2. In the first match-up in Stillwater, the Cowboys defeated Mizzou 79-72. Kansas defeated Oklahoma State 81-66 in Lawrence while Baylor survived 64-60 in Stillwater. Mizzou's Feb. 25th showdown in Phog Allen Fieldhouse plays an even bigger role in the race for the regular season conference title.

GameDay, Revisited

For just the second time in school history, ESPN came to campus for a live broadcast.

It started for the 99th Homecoming, Mizzou vs Oklahoma, when 18,000+ packed the David R. Francis Quadrangle on the University of Missouri campus. Desmond Howard, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, and Lee Corso; along with Erin Andrews and Trevor Matich; used the historic Columns as a backdrop for the GameDay broadcast, "one of the greatest," according to Fowler.

Among the thousands of fans were fellow student athletes to the football team, namely, Kim English. English was milling about with his GameDay sign, hoping to get recognized.

How about another visit to campus from ESPN?

"GAMEDAY, COME BACK 4 BASKETBALL"

The request was simple enough, ESPN had to grant it, right? In October, 2011, right around the start of the college basketball season, the announcement was made on mutigers.com: "College GameDay is coming to Mizzou Arena."

Your wish is ESPN's command, Kimmie.

ESPN was going to make their return, this time for basketball, to Mizzou Arena for what could turn out to be the final meeting between Missouri and Kansas in Columbia for a long time. The Tigers are slated to transfer to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) on July 1st, 2012, leaving a bit of emptiness among fans of the traditional conferences and rivalry setup.

"It's the fans that have the most angst toward Mizzou for going to the SEC," said Kansas head basketball coach Bill Self in an interview prior to the 266th meeting between the two schools. Missouri, as many may or may not know, extended the offer to Kansas to continue the rivalry, but Self, along with KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger, stated that there is no point in continuing if Mizzou is just going to abandon the conference. Other ESPN analysts such as Doug Gottlieb, say that Texas A&M, Mizzou, and their fans "overreacted" to the possibility of the Big 12 collapsing, and were the some of the more "self-absorbed" in the league. (Texas and Oklahoma both flirted with the PAC-12, along with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, which led to former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe to make a deal with Texas called the Longhorn Network, which included no profit sharing among the conference members. Point this out to Gottlieb, and you're responded with "Get over yourself." Gottlieb is also an avid Kansas bandwagon rider, and is not afraid to admit that fact, despite attending and playing basketball for the Cowboys in the late 1990s.)

This point was made during the GameDay broadcast, after which it was met with a chant from the Mizzou crowd in attendance: "KANSAS WON'T PLAY! KANSAS WON'T PLAY! KANSAS WON'T PLAY!" The small contingent of Kansas fans that made the 164-mile trek from Lawrence and braved the hostile crowd at GameDay could only just sit back and take the brunt of the anti-Kansas sentiment that dates back to before the Civil War.

"We would like to continue to play [Kansas]," said Missouri head basketball coach Frank Haith, "Rivalries should not, and are not bound by conference affiliation." This statement was collaborated by the GameDay hosts- Rece Davis, Huebert Davis, Digger Phelps, and Jay Bilas.

Tigers' head football coach Gary Pinkel also showed an interest in keeping the 100+ year old rivalry alive. "They [Kansas] are our biggest rivals. It'd be a shame to end that."

"We would like to continue the rivalry, with either a home-and-home, or a conference tournament in Kansas City," said Mizzou athletic director Mike Alden, back when the SEC switch was announced in November. The stage was officially set for the biggest, most anticipated, and most talked about basketball game between the two schools.

Dozens braved inclement weather to get good spots in line for the best seats in the house. The line started as early as 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, and by the time the doors to Mizzou Arena opened at 7am Saturday, the line wrapped around the block. Mizzou was trying for another GameDay attendance record. (The 18,000+ is still a standing record for football GameDay.)

Small splotches of blue and red were found in a sea of gold inside Mizzou Arena, as some Kansas fans went as far as wearing gold sweatshirts over the top of their Jayhawk pride. Once inside and seated, surrounded by thousands of Mizzou faithful, they shucked their gold and a thunderous "BOOOOO!" cascaded down from the rafters. Some were seated directly behind the GameDay desk. Others were stuck off in a corner with signs that read "171-94, you call that a rivalry?" talking about the series lead Kansas has over Mizzou in basketball. Tiger fans in the vicinity responded to the sign with "Try playing another sport!"

True, the series was 171-94 prior to Mizzou's 74-71 win, but in other sports, it's a different story. In football, Mizzou leads the rivalry 57-54-9 (KU disputes it as 56-55-9 MU). On the baseball diamond, Mizzou's lead is 212-123-6 (also disputed). The overall series in the M&I Bank Border Showdown Series has Mizzou holding a dominant 7-2 advantage in taking home the hardware. They're en route for their 8th, and possibly final Border Showdown trophy.

To add to the hype, Mizzou, when GameDay is in attendance, is 2-1 overall. The first of the two wins being when College GameDay built by the Home Depot broadcasted from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, when the Mizzou and Kansas football teams were ranked 4th and 2nd. Mizzou won 36-28 and moved into the BCS #1 spot. The second being Oct. 23rd, 2010, when "big, bad" Oklahoma came to town. Mizzou was 11th, OU 1st. Mizzou won 36-27, knocking the Sooners from their perch. Their lone loss was when GameDay was in Norman back in 2007 for Oklahoma's Homecoming celebration. After this weekend, you can improve their record to 3-1 when ESPN is in the house.

Marcus Denmon, Kim English, Phil Pressey and the rest of the guys knew the hype leading up to the game, and pleaded with fans in the week leading up to the game on Twitter and Facebook, saying "Please don't rush the floor. Act like you expected us to win." Those were almost their famous last words. With KU up by 8, with 2:22 to go, the Jayhawks' Conner Tehan had some jack-jawing to do with Denmon after a KU basket. Denmon responded to Tehan with scoring nine points as a part of an 11-0 Tiger run at the end to put the Jayhawks out of their misery, 74-71. Denmon lit up the scoreboard for 29 points, while English brought home 18 and Dixon netted 15, respectively. 

The big story of the game on the Kansas side was Thomas Robinson. After a quiet first half, Robinson exploded in the second, getting Kansas out to their largest lead of the game, 11. Robinson finished with 25 points while Tyshawn Taylor contributed 25. A last-ditch effort and a desperation 3-pt shot at the buzzer sealed their fate, and as Marcus stood in front of the student section, referred to as the "Zou Crew", telling them to stay in their seats, it was literally one versus one hundred. Imagine Denmon being King Leonitis staring down Xerxes' army in the movie "300". It'd be something like that.

Marcus and the gang prevailed, improving their season record to 20-2, 8-2, and move into first in the Big 12 standings, but there is one question that remains, however- Will Jay Bilas follow @Englishscope24 on Twitter?

Denmon overcomes "slump"

COLUMBIA, MO- By the numbers: 11. The number of times Missouri has knocked off a top-25 ranked Kansas since 1990. 7. The number of regular season Big 12 titles that Kansas has either won or shared. 4. The number of wins for Kansas in the last 5 meetings in Columbia. 3. The number of times Mizzou and Kansas have met when both have been ranked in the top 10. 171-94. The series lead for Kansas entering tonight's installment of the Border War.

Marcus Denmon pleaded with fans to NOT rush the court at the conclusion of the game, a change from years past when Missouri does the seemingly impossible- beating Kansas.

That's exactly what Mizzou (21-2, 8-2) did tonight, for the 12th time since 1990, with Denmon going for 29 points in the Tigers' 74-71 victory in what could be the last time that the two teams play in Columbia. Kansas (18-5, 8-2) almost edged out the win, but a Tyshawn Taylor charge late led to Mizzou's second win over Kansas since 2009. Kim English had 18 of his own. Thomas Robinson netted 25 to lead the Jayhawks. Taylor also had 21 for Kansas.

"I took the same shots I always shoot. I knew those shots would fall," said Denmon following the game.

The series is now 171-95, in favor of Kansas.

With the win, Mizzou now creates a three-way tie for first in the Big 12 with the Tigers, Bears, and Jayhawks all sporting 8-2 records:

• Mizzou- 21-2, 8-2 (K-State, OKST)
• Baylor- 21-2, 8-2 (Kansas, Mizzou)
• Kansas- 18-5, 8-2 (UK, Duke, Davidson, ISU, Mizzou)

• Mizzou plays Baylor in Columbia (W 89-88 in Waco), Kansas in Lawrence (W 74-71 in Columbia).
• Baylor plays Mizzou in Columbia (L 88-89 in Waco), Kansas in Waco (L 72-94 in Lawrence).
• Kansas plays Baylor in Waco (W 92-74 in Lawrence), Mizzou in Lawrence (L 71-74 in Columbia).

By the virtue of heads-up play, Mizzou is now 1st in the Big 12. They've defeated both Kansas and Baylor, and Kansas has beaten Baylor.

For most, today was just another day. February 1st. The day before Groundhog's Day. For the others- the sports freaks who eat, breathe, live, and die by ESPN and college athletics, today was much more than "just another day". Today was National Signing Day. Hundreds of recruits signed their letters of intent to play for 120 NCAA D-I (FBS) schools. The biggest catch of the day? Dorial Green-Beckham to Mizzou. But there were many more that slid under the radar, tucked away in the corner while America awaited the #1 recruit's decision. They may have gone largely unnoticed in the national spotlight, but they still deserve their credit.

Dorial Green-Beckham. 5-star, ESPN 150, #1 rated wide receiver from Hillcrest (MO), and many tout he's the #1 recruit in the nation. Holder of national high school receiving records.
Evan Boehm. A 4-star offensive lineman from Lees Summit West (MO), the #2 offensive guard overall, and a member of the ESPN 150 along with Beckham.
Maty Mauk. 4-star, quarterback from Kenton (OH). Mauk set Ohio state football passing records (breaking his older brother's records) en route to being named Ohio's "Mr. Football".
Torey Boozer. 3-star linebacker from Everman (TX).
Donavin Newsom. 4-star inside linebacker from Parkway North (MO).
Michael Scherer. 3-star linebacker from St. Louis.
Jordan Williams. 3-star offensive tackle from Denton, TX.
Ka'Ra Stewart. 3-star safety from O'Fallon, IL.
Morgan Steward. 3-star running back from Kansas City, MO.
Russell Hansbrough. 3-star running back from Arlington, TX.
Sean Culkin. 2-star tight end from Largo, FL.
Levi Copelin. 2-star safety (Mizzou lists him as a wide receiver) from Broken Arrow, OK.
Chaston Cuffee, Evan Winston, John Gibson, Rickey Hatley, Harold Brantley, Markus Golden, and Darius White round out the 21st-ranked recruiting class.

Still awaiting word on Ed Ray, a 3-star defensive tackle out of St. Louis, who is still listed as "committed" on Mizzou's ESPN website.
